What is Hastelloy C22 Material
Hastelloy is an alloy of nickel and molybdenum. It is available in several grades, many of which are nickel chromium molybdenum alloys. Hastelloy C22 is one of the Hastelloy steel grade.
Hastelloy C-22 is identified by the Unified Numbering System (UNS) designation of N06022. It is a nickel based alloy with high nickel (56%), chromium (22%), and molybdenum (13%). Werkstoff’s number 2.4602, Inconel ® Alloy 22, VDM ® Alloy 22 and ATI 22™ alloy fall under same UNS number.
Alloy C22 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum solid solution strengthened super-alloy with a nominal chemical composition of 56% nickel, 22% chromium, and 13% molybdenum, with additions of iron, tungsten, and cobalt. It is commonly referred to by the tradename Hastelloy C22 and the universal designation UNS N06022. C22 has excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance, great mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures, and good fabrication properties.
Hastelloy C22 (UNS N06022) is the most versatile nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy available today. With improved resistance to both uniform and localized corrosion, it will outperform other nickel alloys such as C-276, C-4, Alloy 20, and Alloy 625 in applications using a variety of mixed industrial chemicals.
The composition of Hastelloy C-22 has many benefits that help enhance resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. It
has excellent resistance to oxidizing aqueous media, including wet chlorine, mixtures containing nitric acid, and oxidizing acids with chlorine ions.

Material Properties of Hastelloy C22 Forged Flange
Nickel is one of the main elements in Hastelloy C22 alloy, which gives the alloy good toughness, workability and corrosion resistance. Nickel can form a passivation film on the alloy surface to prevent corrosive media from further eroding the metal matrix.
Chromium content is between 20 – 22.5%. Chromium is an important alloying element that forms a dense protective film of chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) on the surface of the alloy.
Molybdenum content is 12.5 – 14.5%. The addition of molybdenum significantly improves the corrosion resistance of the alloy to reducing media. Molybdenum increases the strength and hardness of the alloy, helping to enhance the structural stability of Hastelloy C22 flat weld flanges when under pressure.
Tungsten content is approximately 2.5 – 3.5%. Tungsten helps improve the alloy’s high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance.
This allows Hastelloy C22 slip on flange to withstand high pressure and corrosion in high-temperature chemical processes or other high-temperature application scenarios without easily deforming or corroding damage.

ASME B16.5 Forged Flange Dimension
ASME B16.5 is the standard specification for pipe flanges and flanged fittings sized from NPS 1/2 (DN 15) to NPS 24 (DN 600). It is the most widely used flange standard in piping industry.
ASME B16.5 flanges has seven rating classes: Class 150, Class 300, Class 400, Class 600, Class 900, Class 1500, Class 2500. Size range from NPS 1/2 [DN 15] to NPS 24 [DN 600] .The flange types include weld neck(WN), slip on (SO), threaded (THD), socket welding (SW), lap joint (LPJ), blind (BL), long weld neck (LWN), and reducing flange. The end flange facings can be furnished as raised face (RF), ring joint face (RTJ), flat face (FF), large or small male/female face, small male/female face, large or small tongue face, and large or small groove face. Among all of the facings, raised face (RF) and ring joint face (RTJ) are most commonly used.

What Is the Difference Between Hastelloy & Stainless Steel
There are various types of materials for forged flanges, but when applied to harsh chemical substances or extreme temperature environments, the choice is usually attributed to high-performance alloys such as Hastelloy and stainless steel. Both materials have the characteristics of durability and corrosion resistance, but Hastelloy and stainless steel have different properties that make them stand out in terms of performance, cost, and suitability for specific environments.
Component
Stainless steel is an alloy made of iron, chromium, and nickel elements. Adding these elements enhances the properties of stainless steel, making it resistant to corrosion and oxidation.
Hastelloy is a group of alloys primarily composed of nickel, molybdenum, and chromium. It also contains small amounts of iron, tungsten, cobalt, and carbon. However, unlike stainless steel, the main component of Hastelloy is nickel, which makes it more corrosion-resistant than stainless steel materials in specific environments.
Corrosion resistance
Stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance and performs well in acidic and alkaline environments. The chromium content forms a protective oxide layer on the surface of stainless steel, enhancing its corrosion resistance.
Due to its higher nickel content than ordinary stainless steel materials, Hastelloy alloy has higher corrosion resistance. This difference makes it suitable for highly corrosive environments such as chemical processing plants and oil drilling platforms.
Strength and durabilit
Stainless steel is a very sturdy material with high tensile strength, making it an ideal choice for load-bearing structures. It also has good ductility, which means you can easily shape it into different shapes without losing strength.
Due to its higher nickel and molybdenum content, Hastelloy alloy has better mechanical properties than stainless steel materials, which makes it more versatile in extreme environments of high temperature and high pressure.

Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Alloy C22 is one of the most corrosion-resistant alloys available, even outperforming C276 and 625. It is resistant to almost all reducing and oxidizing environments, including strong oxidizers, seawater, and organic acids. In addition, C22 has excellent resistance to chloride-induced localized corrosion, including pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
Oxidation Resistance
C22 has excellent resistance to oxidation, carburization, and sulfidation at elevated temperatures. However, C22 should not be used at temperatures above 1250°F due to the possible formation of embrittling phases.
Mechanical Properties
C22 is typically provided in the annealed condition with a minimum yield strength of 45 ksi. However, C22 can be cold worked to higher strength levels.
Heat Treatment
C22 is typically annealed at 2050°F (1121°C), followed by rapid cooling.
Workability
C22 can be hot work or cold worked. However, C22 work-hardens rapidly. Therefore, cold working must often be perform in stages with intervening anneals. Parts should be anneal after cold working.
