The main structural feature of the ASTM A182 lap joint flange is the loose connection. It consists of a flange body, a flange nipple and connecting bolts. The flange body and the flange nipple are loose fitting, and this structure allows the pipeline to expand and contract freely within a certain range.
A182 is a standard specification of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). A182 lap joint flange is a type of flange manufactured in accordance with this standard, covering a variety of materials such as alloy steel, stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, etc. This standard covers lap joint flanges made of a variety of alloys and stainless steel materials to meet the use requirements in different industrial environments. It has corrosion-resistant properties and is suitable for industries such as chemical industry and food processing that have high requirements for pipeline cleanliness and corrosion resistance.
Size Range | 1/2″ – 24” / DN15 – DN600 |
Pressure Rating | Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, 2500lb |
Standard | ASME B16.5, EN1092-1 |
Alloy Steel | ASTM A182 F11 / 12 / 5 / 9 / 91 / 92 |
Stainless Steel | ASTM A182 F304/304L/304H, 316/316L, 310S, 317,347,904L |
Duplex Stainless Steel | ASTM A182 F51, F53, F44 |
The flanges covered by ASTM A182 are typically produced by forging or rolling methods. This ensures that the material’s mechanical properties are optimized for the intended service conditions.
ASTM A182 Stainless Steel Flanges are designed to meet specific and temperature requirements. The standard provides various classes (Class 150, Class 300, Class 600, etc.) to indicate the pressure-temperature rating of the flanges.
The specification outlines the testing procedures and quality control measures to ensure that the flanges meet the required standards. Common tests include chemical composition analysis, mechanical testing, and non-destructive testing methods.
Two-Piece Design: Consists of a flange and a stub end.
Rotating Flange: The lap joint flange can rotate freely around the stub end, making alignment easier during installation.
No Direct Contact with Fluid: The flange does not come into direct contact with the process fluid, making it ideal for corrosive environments.
Reusable: Since only the stub end contacts the fluid, the flange can be reused even if the stub end wears out.

ASTM A182 lap joint flanges are commonly made of stainless steel, such as 304, 316, etc. 304 stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It can prevent the external corrosive medium from corroding the flange.
In addition to chromium and nickel, 316 stainless steel also contains 2-3% molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum further improves the corrosion resistance of the flange.

One of the main characteristics of alloy steel lap joint flanges is its high strength. The addition of these alloying elements changes the crystal structure of the steel and increases the yield strength and tensile strength of the steel.
